Several states have declared The Kashmir Files tax-free in order to encourage more folks to see it in theaters. On March 11, 2022, the film based on the exodus of Hindus from Kashmir in the 1990s was released in over 630 Indian theaters. It has been declared tax-free in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led states of Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh,  and Uttarakhand

The Kashmir Files became a box-office success in its first two days of release. On the fifth day of its release, the film grossed Rs. 60.20 crore at the domestic box office. In addition, the film earned an estimated 5 crore in overseas markets during its opening weekend.

Public & Political Reactions on ‘The Kashmir Files’ 

Following the release of ‘The Kashmir Files,’ several leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reacted and voiced their thoughts on the film. PM Modi praised the film, which was made about Kashmiri Pandits, saying that such films “reveal the truth” and that there has been a conspiracy to discredit it.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and major ministers in his BJP government have praised the film; a few BJP-ruled states have waived taxes on it, and police in Madhya Pradesh have been given a day off to watch it. Modi also called the criticism a “conspiracy to discredit” the film. Furthermore, during the BJP parliamentary meeting, PM Modi attacked those who criticized the film, claiming that those who constantly raise the flag of free expression are agitated.

AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi slammed the recently released film ‘The Kashmir Files,’ claiming that the militants also killed 1,500 non-Kashmiri Pandits. “1,500 non-Kashmiri pandits were also killed by militants, but no one is talking about them or crying for them.” “There will be no film based on them to fill their pockets,” Owaisi stated.

The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has expressed concern about disturbing visuals calling for hatred against a specific community.

The Kashmir Files is supposed to be a film about the plight of Kashmiri Pandits who died as a result of targeted killings in 1990. The film is based on video interviews with first-generation Kashmiri Pandit victims and is directed by Vivek Agnihotri, who is known for his right-wing views. The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has ordered not to use depictions of martyred Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna. The order was issued after the late Indian Air Force officer’s wife, Nirmal Khanna, stated that the film does not present facts but rather demands and disrespects her late husband’s sanctity.

For the uninitiated, martyr Ravi Khanna was one of four IAF personnel allegedly killed on January 25, 1990, in Srinagar by a group led by Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik.

Before the release of ‘The Kashmir Files,’ the filmmaker claimed that comedian Kapil Sharma refused to invite him on ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ because the film lacked a big star, prompting the hashtag #BoycottKapilSharmaShow to trend on Twitter. The comedian, on the other hand, refuted the claims, and Anupam Kher also clarified the controversy.

Anupam Kher clarified in an interview with a news channel that he was invited to comedian Kapil Sharma’s show but declined because the film deals with a serious issue. The senior actor was joined on the show by film director Vivek Agnihotri and actor Pallavi Joshi, who both stated that Kapil has no ill will toward them or the film.

  • Screening of The Kashmir Files halted in Jammu and other locations 

On Friday, the film’s screening at Jammu’s Wave Cinemas was cancelled, and those who had purchased tickets were thrashed and assaulted by authorities at the multiplex.

Netizens who shared videos of the incident on Twitter claimed that the authorities assaulted a 16-year-old boy and abused two other girls who were present.

  • All the while, another Twitter user revealed that The Kashmir Files’ shows in Shillong had been cancelled. The incident was reported on Twitter by a user, who stated that the “show of The Kashmir File” at Galleria Cinema in Shillong was cancelled “after making a house full with an audience.”
